Florilegium
A florilegium is an anthology of gathered flowers, first appearing in illustrated form in the 1600s. As trade routes opened and the world unfolded, the beauty of flowers inspired a visual value on plants beyond medicinal purposes, thus developing a new concept in gardening, the flower garden.
As our world opens and unfolds post-pandemic and the vagaries of the last few years – my mother's death and my health challenges pass – I chose to focus on a project that heightened my interaction with nature, beauty, and joy.
My mother, an avid gardener, planted a flower garden each year, and my earliest memories involve a house filled with music and assemblages from her garden. I can honor my life and hers through sound and flowers.
This project, a year-long exploration centered on the fleeting nature of time and our small windows of joy, I present in blooms. It has four chapters (thus far) and postulates that viewing flowers and surrounding yourself with beauty have mental and physiological benefits.
